Types of back pain

Being one of the most frequent conditions pertaining to the musculoskeletal system, back pain easily can become a chronic pain, which can affect the person’s quality of life. For this same reason, it is important to know the cause and type of back pain suffered in order to choose the best possible treatment.

The most common classification uses the location of the pain. That is, if the pain is in the cervical region (neck), dorsal area (thorax), or lumbar region (lower back), with the latter also being able to cause sciatica.

In terms of duration, back pain can be divided into:

  • Acute pain, lasting less than 6 weeks.
  • Subacute pain, which lasts between 6 weeks and 3 months.
  • Chronic pain, which lasts more than 3 months.
  • Recurrent pain, which appears as acute episodes between pain-free periods lasting at least 3 months.

Another important classification takes into consideration the function that is done to awaken the pain. Mechanical type pain is one of the most common, accounting for about 90% of all pain. It is the typical pain that appears and is exacerbated by movement, and eases with rest. Trauma and joint problems are examples of this.

Inflammatory pain is one of the most annoying ones, as it does not subside with rest and may worsen at night with sleep. It usually improves with activity, for example, in people with rheumatic diseases. And the neuropathic type of pain, which is caused by the compression and irritation of a nerve, producing pain in the entire region it innervates. Sciatica and some neuropathies are a perfect example of this type.
