Osteoarthritis (OA) of the Knee

Osteoarthritis is a form of arthritis (literally, “joint inflammation”). In this case, the tissues in the joints break down over time, and the knee is one of the most commonly affected parts of the body.

During a person’s lifetime, joints go through a normal cycle of damage and repair. However, as the body goes through the repair process, it can modify the knee joints shape or structure. When this happens, osteoarthritis emerges. The result is that the cartilage in your knee joint thins out and the surfaces of the joint become rougher. As a consequence, the knee cannot function as smoothly; it becomes stiff and hurts.

Causes of OA of the Knee

Cartilage is like a shock absorber; it protects the joints from bumps and jolts. After continuous work, this absorber slowly wears out. For example, this is what causes the self-explanatory condition of the jumper’s knee.

So, knee joint cartilage can wear out if:

  • Your body mass index (BMI) is 30 or more.
  • You suffer a knee injury, say, as when having a hard fall.
  • You frequently put stress on your knee at work or playing sports.
  • You have a congenital tendency to develop osteoarthritis of the knee.
  • You have crooked bones or joints.

Symptoms

In the majority of the cases, pain is the first indicator of osteoarthritis in the knee. Whether while moving or sitting still, you might feel pain.

Other symptoms include:

  • Stiffness, especially when getting up in the morning or after sitting for long.
  • Swelling and puffiness.
  • Cracking or grinding noise when moving the knee.
  • A wobbly feeling.
