Peripheral neuropathy: treatment and precautions

Being the peripheral neuropathy the dysfunction of any of the nerves of the peripheral nervous system that can be due to multiple causes and that also presents diverse manifestations, selecting the best therapeutic plan for this condition can be somewhat challenging. For this reason, going to a health professional is the first step to take on your road to recovery.

The treatment of this condition depends, logically, on its cause. This means that, if it is caused by an uncontrolled diabetes, for example, this should be controlled, or if the neuropathy is due to trauma, the appropriate techniques should be used for this specific recovery.

Certainly, the use of analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, such as NSAIDs or steroids, and local anesthetics can be considered at the beginning of treatment. Physical therapy in this case takes a very important role, where transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS) can be used to apply small currents and prevent the transmission of pain or, in part, to recover the myoelectric activity of the affected limb. Strength, motor, balance, and stability control exercises, among others, are also added to the plan.

If necessary, other treatments include administering vitamin complexes or supplements, surgical intervention, referral to a pain management specialist or psychotherapy.

In addition to the treatment, a series of precautionary measures may be necessary:

  • Do not walk barefoot.
  • Check shoes before wearing them.
  • Fix uneven areas on the floor.
  • Illuminate the environment where you are.
  • Make use of handrails, especially in the bathroom.
  • Frequently watch your skin for wounds or bruises.
  • Wash with lukewarm water and mild soap, dry the area well and keep it moisturized.
