We don’t manage pain. We treat it.

Main causes of back pain

One of the most frequent conditions in the human being, as far as the musculoskeletal system is concerned, is back pain. It is one of those things that we will all suffer from at least once in our lives. From minor discomfort to severe and constant pain, back pain is one of the most frequent causes of work-related sick leave in the world, and much of this is due to its multiple causes.

According to its location, back pain is divided into neck pain, thoracic pain, and low back (lumbar) pain, and, according to its duration, it can be divided into acute, with a duration of fewer than 6 weeks, and chronic, lasting more than 3 months.

If we consider the back as a whole made up of bones, intervertebral discs, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, etc., the causes of back pain can be diverse, as mentioned above. The following are the most common causes:

  • Physical strain is undoubtedly one of the main causes, as it is a risk factor for the development of muscle tension or spasms, but when the strain is very strong, more severe damage, such as herniated discs or fractures can occur.
  • Conditions that compromise the anatomy of some structures can produce severe back pain. Osteoporotic and arthritic processes, ruptured intervertebral discs, sciatica, among others, can cause great disability.
  • Everyday activities that tend to produce poor posture can also produce pain. Some examples are overstretching, sitting too much, craning the neck forward, hunching over while working, sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress, etc.
  • Other medical conditions can also cause back pain, among which are: infectious or neoplastic processes of the spine, kidney stones, urinary infections, herpes zoster, among others.

With this in mind, consulting with an expert on the matter can be a big step towards healing the painful process. It is important to remember that it is not a matter of silencing the symptoms with pills, but of finding the source of the pain.
