How to Lift Without Back Pain
Bending and lifting may seem like simple tasks to some. Picking up heavy objects may not be a challenge during young adult years. However, as people age, chronic back pain hurts from improper lifting techniques. Back pain may start only when a person bends, but it can grow into a chronic condition that always hurts. Improper lifting can result in a muscle sprain or strain. So, people should learn how to properly lift heavier objects. The right lifting technique can save a person from years of aching back pain.
Bend the Legs, Not the Back
From time to time, people may need to carry things from one place to another. For example, moving can be a stressful life event for a person’s mindset and back. The frequent bending and pulling can harm the spine if it continues and there is no relief for the back. To avoid chronic back pain from lifting, do not lift with the back at all. Follow this general guideline when it comes to heavy lifting.
1. Always stand up straight and do not bend the back when lifting
2. Bend the knees and crouch down to pick up the object
3. Grab the object by handles, if possible, then stand up again with the back completely straight
Lifting with the legs is a much safer technique than bending the back and harming those muscles. The legs and knees will be carrying the weight, without back pain. These joints and muscles are meant to carry the body weight altogether so they can handle the lift more so than the back.

Also, if a person bends over completely to pick up an object, they are risking injury to any of the vertebrae in their back. A slipped or herniated disc can be painful as well. This form of chronic back pain is a backbone that falls out of place. The abnormal position can harm nerves anywhere around the spinal cord. It is best to keep the back straight when lifting, walking and even sleeping. Good posture becomes a habit if someone understands the importance.
